Culture may be characterized by how a group of people understand the world through spirituality, cultural customs, gown and interaction (Gargiulo 2012). According to Richard M. Since our country's demographics transform, our colleges are changing (Gargiulo 2012). Cultural selection is most noticeable in our colleges (Gargiulo 2012). Schools are some of the initial places are likely to recognize heterogeneous cultures (Gargiulo 2012). Educational institutions should " work together to overcome worries, misconceptions and myths” about our dissimilarities (Gollnick 2009). Thus came into being the idea of a multicultural education. Gargiulo claims that a multicultural education attained popularity in schools in the 1960's (2012). Before multiculturism was approved into universities children were expected to leave their " family and social backgrounds at the schoolhouse door” (Cole 2008). Multcultural education is closely linked to the growing diversity of the schools (Gargiulo 2012). Multiculturism is defined as " more than one culture” (Gargiulo 2012). Gargiulo says schools should " accept basic commonalities” and " appreciate the differences” of all kids, no matter all their culture (2012).
